The Basics of Recycling Scrap Metal

Recycling scrap metal is an excellent way to give new life to old materials while getting a bit of extra cash in your pocket. There are many benefits to recycling scrap metal as it keeps things out of the landfill and contributes to a greener earth. Plus, it takes away potential hazards off your property, and you get some monetary benefits, too. Before you dive into the process, be sure to consider the basics of recycling scrap metal. Knowing what can and can’t be repurposed is a key first step. If you have any questions, feel free to call our team at Belson Steel prior to stopping by our scrap yard.

You Can Earn Money By Recycling Scrap Metal

Most people don’t realize that scrap metal can be transformed into cash payments by keeping precious materials out of the landfill. At our scrap yard, we make deals with patrons by weighing their materials and offering competitive pricing for what they want to sell. We handle different metals on a regular basis and have experience dealing with copper, tungsten, steel, iron and so much more. Plumbers, electricians and steel mills can gain a bit of revenue through our steel selling services

We Use a Magnet to Assess Metal Value

An essential first step after you bring your metal to our scrap yard is determining whether the material is ferrous or nonferrous—or that which has iron and doesn’t have iron, respectively. The simplest way to discern this is by using a magnet. Basically:

  • If the Metal Attracts the Magnet: This indicates you have a ferrous metal, most likely iron or steel. While ferrous metals aren’t particularly valuable, we will properly recycle them for you.
  • If the Metal Doesn’t Attract the Magnet: If the magnet doesn’t stick, you have a nonferrous metal, such as copper, brass, aluminum or stainless steel. These are valuable to us and we will recycle them into something new. You can get a decent amount of cash for these metals.

Once you’re ready to bring your materials to our scrap yard, be sure to call ahead if you aren’t sure if you have something we don’t accept. Going to a scrap yard for the first time can be intimidating, especially if you aren’t sure of the process. We are happy to answer any of your questions over the phone.

Know Your Metals

Before you hand us your materials, consider what you’re working with. Setting expectations will help you get an idea of how much the stuff is worth. Basically, copper is very valuable, while the aluminum present in soda cans and other commercial packaging typically isn’t. Here’s where you can find certain metals:

  • Copper: Copper is present in electrical wires, pipes, gutters and even in air conditioners. Be sure to separate these from your other items, as it deserves individualized attention.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum is typically a gray or whitish color. It bends easily and is found in basic forms of garbage. Recycled aluminum saves 80% of the energy needed to make it new, so it’s worth recycling.
  • Brass: This material tends to be quite heavy and is a yellowish color. You can find it in keys, light fixtures, door handles and other places. It’s a mid-priced material because of its density.
