Most people don’t realize that they can help the environment simply by taking scrap metal and the metal in unused and broken equipment to a facility for recycling. But scrap metal recycling—whether on a small scale or on an industrial scale—has multiple benefits. For example, scrap metal recycling reduces the need for new metal mining and therefore conserves resources, supports local workers and the local economy, and keeps materials out of the landfill.
At Belson Steel, you can recycle your scrap metal and get paid top dollar to do so. Here’s what you should know about the scrap metal recycling process and how to get started with our scrap metal recycling team—
The first thing that you should know about recycling your metal with Belson Steel is that we’ll handle 100 percent of the process from start to finish—all you have to do is bring your metal into us or call us for metal pick-up or container services.
Once scrap metal is collected, the next step is scrap metal sorting. We’ll sort metal into ferrous and nonferrous groups, as well as separate out any plastics or materials for proper recycling or disposal.
Next in the process is shearing. This is the process of cutting metal into smaller, more manageable pieces. The metal is then shredded, where it is crushed into even smaller pieces. At this stage, metal separation continues—magnetic drums work to pull ferrous pieces of metal away from nonferrous pieces. Then, the two separate materials are pressed into separate large blocks of metal in a process called baling.
Usually, baling is the last step in the process before the metal is transported to a steel mill for further process.
Once the baled scrap reaches the steel mill, processing continues. The first step is melting. The scrap metal will be put in a high-temperature furnace in order to melt it down into a high-quality raw material; it is then poured into castors and shaped.
After metal has been shaped and has cooled, it can then be transformed into other shapes for industrial use, such as sheets, pipes, or tubing.
If you have metal that needs to be recycled, getting started with our company is easy. You can bring your metal products directly to our scrap yard, or you can call us to request on-site container and transportation services. We buy a wide variety of metal-containing products and are committed to keeping as many materials out of the landfill as possible.
