How Can Recycling Scrap Metal Help the Planet?

Industry and environmentalism aren’t often thought of as going hand-in-hand, but there are certain industries and activities that do serve the planet. One industry that serves both the local economy and the environment is that of scrap metal recycling. At Belson Steel Center Scrap Inc., we are proud to work in an industry that’s doing its part to combat environmental ills and climate change. Here’s how scrap metal recycling can help the planet–

Reducing the Need for New Metal Mining

While metal mining may be necessary to produce new metals, it’s a very environmentally destructive process that can result in habitat loss, emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, and air and water contamination. When metals are recycled, they can be reused and the need for new metal mining is reduced.

Energy-Efficiency Savings

Another benefit to the environment of recycling scrap metal is that recycling conserves energy. These energy savings can be massive. For example, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains that when an aluminum can is recycled, using the recycled aluminum to make a new aluminum can uses 95 percent less energy than using bauxite ore, which is the raw material that aluminum is made from.

Recycling Scrap Metal Helps to Reduce GHG Emissions

As stated above, new metal mining is an energy-intensive process that results in the emissions of multiple pollutants, including greenhouse gases. And it’s not just mining the metal that is emissions-intensive, but also the processes of smelting, refining, and casting. While recycling scrap metal is by no means a greenhouse gas-free process, the amount of greenhouse gases produced is significantly less. This helps to mitigate climate change.

Metal Is a Non-renewable Resource

While it’s not something that most people think about, metals are a non-renewable resource. This means that once all of the metals have been extracted from the earth’s crust, they will take hundreds of thousands of years to naturally replenish. In other words, there is a finite amount of metal on the planet. The extraction of non-renewable resources isn’t just environmentally damaging, but it also, by definition, is unsustainable. Recycling metals helps to ensure that we have the materials we need for years to come.
